There was triple Dutch delight during the 2017 German Darts Masters day 2 evening session, as all of Michael van Gerwen, Raymond van Barneveld and Jelle Klaasen won their second round fixtures.

Peter Wright, James Wade, Mensur Suljovic, Cristo Reyes and local qualifier Steffen Siepmann were also victorious from a session that saw relatively low averages but close clashes.

Meanwhile, recent maiden PDC ranking title champions Daryl Gurney and Joe Cullen crashed out in Jena.

Read on for our in-depth review, in order of when the matches took place…

With the likes of Simon Whitlock, Kim Huybrechts, Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith all through to the third round from the afternoon session, James Wade seemed determined to join them quickly as he raced to a 5-1 lead against Robert Thornton in the opening match of the session opener.

The Thorn was able to peg The Machine back to 5-3, but couldn’t keep up the late charge. Wade now faces Welsh star Price for a place in the quarter-finals.

Recent Players Championship 8 champion Joe Cullen looked as though he’d cruise to the third round too, after going 2-0 up against German qualifier Steffen Siepmann.

But, backed by his home crowd in Jena, the first round conqueror of a lacklustre Andrew Gilding incredibly racked up six of the next nine legs to overcome the Yorkshireman 6-5 – with three ton-plus checkouts along the way including 100 to claim the decider. Siepmann, who averaged just 80.92 to Cullen’s 85.46, is rewarded with a tie against Whitlock.

Young Welshman Jamie Lewis threatened to cause another shock when he broke third seed Mensur Suljovic in the first leg, and held throw until he was 5-3 up.

But Rasta was unable to convert four match darts, and The Gentle now faces Kyle Anderson in the quarters.

Daryl Gurney has had a brilliant last week or so, after claiming his maiden PDC ranking title, before reaching another final and knocking recent nine-dart hero Adrian Lewis out of the 2017 German Darts Masters first round.

But unseeded SuperChin came up short against Jelle Klaasen, who now takes on Dutch compatriot Jeffrey de Graaf.

Next up, 2017 UK Open winner and last year’s German Darts Masters runner-up Peter Wright put in an assured display to see off former BDO world champion Mark Webster.

Snakebite held throw throughout and broke The Spider twice, while averaging 98.65, to set up a third round meeting with Stephen Bunting, who he beat in this European Tour tournament last year.

Like many matches during this evening session, Raymond van Barneveld and Alan Norris were locked in a tense tussle.

Barney, who has previously said he aims to take part in as many 2017 events as possible, was the eventual 6-4 victor in a low averaging affair which saw a number of missed doubles. The legendary Dutchman next meets his bogey player Kim Huybrechts.

There were no troubles for two-time defending champion Michael van Gerwen, as he defied a low averaging evening on the whole to record a whopping 110.12 against Greece’s John Michael, who didn’t really do too much wrong.

Finishing the match in style with a 136 checkout to win 6-1, Mighty Mike had to wait until the following fixture to know his next opponent…

Last onto the Jena oche this evening session were Spanish star Cristo Reyes and 2013 German Darts Masters runner-up Mervyn King.

The Spartan bust his score in the opening leg before being broken, but bounced back immediately and eventually edged The King in a show of top ton-plus finishing by both. Reyes now faces Van Gerwen – he’s played no one else more times – yet again!
