Four PDC European Tour events are planned to be held in September and October, as Budapest, Jena, Gibraltar and Prague prepare to host tournaments.
The 2020 European Tour season had begun with the Belgian Darts Championship earlier this year, before the global Coronavirus pandemic led to a suspension of events.
Due to restrictions in place in Germany and the Netherlands, planned events in Sindelfingen, Leverkusen, Trier, Munich, Hildesheim, Riesa and Leeuwarden will not now be able to take place this year.
However, the following European Tour events will be able to take place later this year: Hungarian Darts Trophy (Budapest) – September 4-6 German Darts Open (Jena) – September 11-13 Gibraltar Darts Trophy (Gibraltar) – September 25-27 Czech Darts Open (Prague) – October 16-18.
These events will be followed from October 29-November 1 with the European Championship in Dortmund.
In addition, the World Series of Darts Finals remain planned to take place in Salzburg from September 18-20, while the rescheduled BetVictor World Cup of Darts in Graz from November 6-8 will conclude the year’s action in Europe.
Fans with tickets for events which have been affected by postponements will be contacted by PDC Europe in due course in relation to their booking.
Leading online gambling company BetVictor has extended its partnership with PDC by continuing with the title sponsorship of the BetVictor World Cup of Darts ahead of the 2020 tournament, which will take place from June 18-21 at Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg.
Since being introduced to the calendar in 2010, the 32-nation tournament has grown in stature celebrating the sport’s global expansion as two-player teams compete across four days.
“The 2019 BetVictor World Cup of Darts was a sensational tournament and it’s fantastic that BetVictor has extended its association with the event in 2020” said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.
“The World Cup of Darts reflects our worldwide growth as a sport and is getting more competitive every year as developing nations gain valuable big-stage experience. The tournament is massively popular with players, fans and our worldwide broadcast partners and I’m sure that the 2020 BetVictor World Cup of Darts will be another huge success.”
Matt Scarrott, Director of Sportsbook at BetVictor, said: “We’re very pleased to continue with the title sponsorship of the BetVictor World Cup of Darts, which is set to be another exciting competition.
“We’ve previously partnered with the PDC on a number of successful tournaments and we’re confident the 2020 competition will set the bar even higher.”
The 2020 BetVictor World Cup of Darts will return for a second successive year to the Barclaycard Arena with Scotland set to defend the title they won in 2019, defeating Ireland in the final.
Both the Netherlands and England are the other previous winners, having claimed four victories apiece from 2010-2018 before Scottish pair Gary Anderson and Peter Wright took glory in the most recent edition.
Tickets for the BetVictor World Cup of Darts are available from PDC Europe via www.pdc-europe.de/tickets.
FIVE players will make their BetVictor World Matchplay debuts at the Winter Gardens later this month, while Michael van Gerwen will be the top seed for the prestigious 32-player event.
The 25th staging of the World Matchplay at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens will be held from July 21-29, as players compete for “The Phil Taylor Trophy” after the renaming of the honour following the 16-time champion’s retirement.
Two-time champion Van Gerwen will top the 16 seeded players, with the world number one aiming to win back the title he claimed in 2015 and 2016.
James Wade, the 2007 champion, is the only other former World Matchplay winner in the field, although number two seed Peter Wright, number 13 seed Raymond van Barneveld and number 16 seed Adrian Lewis have all reached the final.
Lewis’ move back to 16th in the world rankings sets the two-time World Champion up for a tasty potential second round tie with Van Gerwen, while Van Barneveld could clash with number four seed Gary Anderson.
However, following the completion of the weekend’s European Darts Matchplay in Hamburg, the qualifying field has been confirmed and includes five Blackpool debutants in a strong line-up.
Welshman Jonny Clayton and Germany’s Max Hopp secured their World Matchplay debuts following European Tour victories this year, while Jeffrey de Zwaan won his maiden Players Championship title in April.
Another Dutchman, Jermaine Wattimena, and Ireland’s Steve Lennon complete the five new faces amongst a high-quality field of ProTour Order of Merit qualifiers.
Richard North held on to claim the final ProTour Order of Merit place, but faced a nervous wait as William O’Connor reached Sunday’s European Darts Matchplay final, only to lose out to Van Gerwen as the Romsey ace sealed his Blackpool spot.
The BetVictor World Matchplay will be broadcast on Sky Sports from July 21-29. For tickets, call the Winter Gardens Box Office on 0844 856 1111 or buy online at pdc.seetickets.com.
Thomas Cook Sport Breaks and Hospitality Packages are also available. See www.pdc.tv/tickets for full details and ticket information.
