Last Saturday the annual Tribute & Memorial dart competitions (Previously; Brian Fox & Bob Anderson Snr Memorial) were, once again, hosted and sponsored by the Academy club, in aid of the Heart of Darts charity.
The idea of the day is to bring the darting family together, in memory of and to pay tribute to, those who are no longer with us. It is a great day of darts while raising money for charity, to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
John Bartlett, the event organiser, thanked everyone for coming and asked for everyone in the club to take a few minutes to pay their respects to our loved ones, family and friends. As a mark of respect and remembrance, everyone joined a round of applause whilst John Bartlett read out the names on the role of honour.
John paid tribute to Roy Blackman, who sadly passed away one year ago to the day and also two people that had passed away this year, Andy Clare from the Chineham Chuckers darts team and most recently Roy Whitby, who was well known in Basingstoke playing for the Sherborne Club, Soldiers Return, Oakridge Club & Malsanger among others. He also played for Hampshire County. Everyone raised a glass to them and all of those who are no longer with us.
The Tribute & Memorial Pairs:
This year’s winners were Jason Heaver & Debbie Shadwell who beat Debbie’s husband Steve Shadwell & Colin Monk 3-2 in a close-fought final.
The losing semi-finalists were Graham Vernon / Phil Huggins losing out to Jason & Debbie 3-2 and in the other close-fought semi-final Ricky Humber /George Hakim also just losing out to Steve and Colin 3-2.
The Tribute & Memorial Singles:
This year’s title was won by Mark Thorne from Andover who beat Jason Heaver in another close-fought final. The losing semi-finalists were last year’s winner Mark Petchey losing 3-1 to Jason Heaver and Graham Vernon losing to Mark Thorne 3-2.
John and Tracey Bartlett, the organisers, were very pleased with what was a very well attended, successful, enjoyable & emotional day. A big thank you to everyone that attended and helping us raise a total of £1,165.00. This year all of the winners and runners up donated their winnings to The Heart of Darts Charity. Also, all of the winners of cash prizes in the money draw also donated these to the Heart of darts Charity.
The money collected was raised from sponsorship, entry fees, prize money, raffle and sale of Heart of Dart pens, keyring torches and pins and other donations.
Big thanks to the Academy snooker centre for their continued support of this event and our thanks also go to all the staff involved in helping making this event a success once again. We look forward to next year’s event and hope to see you all there.
